Can you play Archery Tag in the rain?

Yes, you can play Archery Tag in the rain. The field is open 7 days a week, all year round, and sessions go ahead in all reasonable weather, rain and snow included: only dangerous conditions, such as a thunderstorm or a gale, lead to a free reschedule. Here is what a shower really changes on our 5-hectare forest field in Bierges (Wavre), 15 minutes from Brussels, and how to enjoy it rather than endure it.

Does the session go ahead when it rains?

It goes ahead. At Tag Brussels, we play in all reasonable weather, with sessions starting every hour, from 9 am to 6 pm, 7 days a week, all year round. A shower is not a reason to cancel: Archery Tag is played outdoors, between the trees, and the programme is built for that. When picking your slot, the real question is not whether it will rain, but what goes into your bag.

The flow of a session does not change one bit either: you get your gear before playing time starts, the safety briefing and the archery initiation open the session, then the 15-to-20-minute rounds follow one another, 5 to 8 per slot, with rotating scenarios. What happens to the forest field on a rainy day?

This is where playing in a forest earns its keep. Our 5-hectare private wood holds 5 playing fields, and its canopy catches a good share of the shower before it reaches the players. On rainy days, the trunks, slopes and natural shelters of the site even do double duty: in-game cover on one hand, improvised umbrellas on the other.

The ground, though, is another story: in wet weather it turns slick, sometimes downright muddy. That is not a flaw, that is a forest. Our instructors repeat it at every briefing: the main real risk of the activity is a twisted ankle while running, not the arrows, and that is even truer when it gets slippery. Hence the one piece of equipment that is on you: closed shoes with good support. The instructors themselves stay on the field from start to finish and adapt the intensity to the group.

What should you wear to play in the rain?

All the playing gear is provided and included in the package: bow, rubber-tipped arrows and full-face mask. Overalls are not necessary to play, but we do have them, the same ones we use for paintball: on muddy days they come in handy. The rest is up to you, and it fits in three points:

• Closed shoes with good support, trainers or walking shoes: mandatory in any weather, and when the ground is slick, a lugged sole makes a real difference.
• Flexible clothes that can get dirty: joggers or leggings rather than tight jeans, and nothing that minds a splash of mud.
• A change of clothes, left in the car: a dry top and clean socks in the boot have never ruined a ride home, and the free private car park is on site.

When does the weather actually postpone a session?

There is only one weather-related case: dangerous conditions, such as a thunderstorm, a gale or black ice on the roads. The call comes from us, and your session is then moved free of charge to another slot. Everything else, drizzle, showers or a passing squall, is played as normal.

Summer rain, winter rain: what is the difference?

A summer shower barely registers once the game is on. The same rain in January takes a little preparation: layer a thermal base close to the body, a light fleece, then a waterproof jacket that can get dirty on top, and pack thin running-style gloves and a thin beanie that fits under the mask, both brought from home.
