Playing Archery Tag with glasses: everything you need to know

Yes, you can play Archery Tag with glasses. The full-face mask, mandatory at all times on our field, is worn over most prescription glasses: simply mention them at reception and our instructors will help you adjust the mask. Here are our field-tested tips for playing comfortably, beating the fog and choosing between glasses and contact lenses, in Bierges (Wavre), near Brussels.
Does the full-face mask fit over prescription glasses?
In the vast majority of cases, yes. The high-safety full-face mask we provide covers the entire face and is worn over most prescription glasses: classic frames slide underneath without any fuss. Mention your glasses at reception, our instructors take the time to check the fit with you before the safety briefing. Wearing a very wide or fragile frame? Note it in the message field when you book, or give us a call: we will look at it together before the big day.
The question comes up at every briefing, and for good reason: on the field, the mask never comes off, not even between rounds. It is one of the three non-negotiable rules of the game, along with the minimum shooting distance of 5 to 7 metres and flat shots only. Need to adjust your glasses or wipe your lenses? How do you stop your glasses from fogging up during the game?
Fogging is the real challenge for players with glasses, far more than the mask itself. Running, aiming, crouching behind a tree trunk: the effort warms the air under the mask and your lenses mist over. Three habits solve the problem in most cases:
- The anti-fog spray at reception: ask for it before your session and apply a thin layer to your lenses before stepping onto the field.
- Playing outdoors already helps a lot: on our 5-hectare forest field, the air keeps moving and fog builds up far more slowly than in an indoor arena.
- Use the breaks: between two rounds of 15 to 20 minutes, you catch your breath, arrows get collected and the air under the mask cools down. If a wipe is really needed, it happens in the secured neutral zone, with an instructor's go-ahead.
One last tip from our instructors: do not wipe your lenses with a damp glove or sleeve, the fog comes straight back. A microfibre cloth tucked into a zipped pocket does the job perfectly.
Glasses, contact lenses or a sports strap: which should you choose?
There is no single right answer: it all comes down to your comfort and your prescription. Here is an honest overview of the three options:

Can an arrow break my glasses?
It is the classic worry, and it fades fast: on the field, your glasses sit behind the full-face mask, which covers the whole face and stays on from start to finish. The arrows carry a wide, soft rubber tip about 5 cm across that absorbs the impact, and they fly slowly enough to be seen and dodged. My child wears glasses: can they play?
Yes, from age 8, like every other player. The principle is the same as for adults: the full-face mask is worn over most prescription glasses, and our instructors help each child adjust it before the briefing. The equipment follows suit: softer bows, arrows with a wide rubber tip, rounds paced to the group. Mention your child's glasses in the booking message field: the team keeps an eye on it from the moment you arrive.
Should you let us know in advance?
One word is enough. When booking online, the message field is there for exactly this: glasses, barbecue allergies, scenario requests. On the day, mention your glasses at reception, our instructors check the mask's fit with you before the safety briefing. For a special case, an unusual frame or a strong prescription, put your question to us before booking: bookings are open 7 days a week, from 9 am to 6 pm.

Can you play Archery Tag with contact lenses?
Yes. The full-face mask does not touch the eyes and does not get in the way of contact lenses, and the whole issue of foggy lenses simply disappears. Put them in before you arrive and pack a spare pair in your bag: between the sprints and the dodges, it pays to be prepared.
Can you take the mask off to wipe your glasses?
Never on the field: the full-face mask stays on at all times, even between rounds. If your lenses fog up or your glasses have shifted, wave to an instructor and head to the secured neutral zone: it is the only place where the mask may be lifted.
Do sports glasses or sunglasses replace the mask?
No. The high-safety full-face mask is mandatory for every player, from the briefing to the end of the session: no pair of glasses, however sporty, replaces it. It is supplied, checked and disinfected after every use, like the rest of the equipment.
